THE bulk of household waste could be slashed by 50 per cent if residents take the time to recycle, a council has claimed.
Kent County Council is urging residents to filter rubbish into recycling bins instead of throwing it in the bin.
By taking out drinks bottles, cans, newspapers and cardboard packaging, bulk waste could be reduced.
Keen gardeners, who do not do their own composting, are also being encouraged to take cuttings to be turned into compost.
Dartford residents can use the recycling centre in Rochester Way, Dartford, but must bring a permit with them.
The nearest centre for Swanley residents is in Button Street, Swanley.
The centres are open from 8am to 4.30pm Monday to Saturday and 9am to 4pm Sundays and bank holidays.
The closing time of the centres is 8pm on Wednesdays until the end of September.
Cabinet member for the environment Councillor Keith Ferrin said: "We have to take individual responsibility for the waste we produce.
"Everyone can do their bit with recycling, however small a contribution, and they all make a difference."
