Greenwich students are celebrating their A-level results. The overall pass rate for the borough was 96 per cent - the best results for five years. Samantha Payne reports.

A SCHOOL is celebrating achieving a 100 per cent pass rate in its A-level exams for the second year running.

Shooters Hill Post 16 Campus in Red Lion Lane, Greenwich, also boasted a 12 per cent increase in pupils gaining A to C grades compared with last year.

Figures rose from 54 per cent to 66.5 per cent.

Headteacher Mark Vincent says the results have got better since they have had 54 more students taking A levels this year.

He said: "I'm really pleased with the staff and students and it's a testament to their hard work for the past two years.

"I don't believe A levels are any easier. I think the young men and women have to work really hard today and I am really pleased they are going to university."

One outstanding student was George McAusland, who achieved three As and one B in English literature, psychology, geology and biology.

The 18-year-old of Allenby Road, West Thamesmead, said: "I'm absolutely thrilled. I'm going to Goldsmiths College in New Cross London to study English and American literature.

"My ambition is to become a journalist."

Eltham College also achieved a 100 per cent pass rate in its A levels, with 86.5 per cent achieving grades A to B.

Thirty-three students achieved three grade As with a further 11 gaining four grades at A level.

Headteacher Paul Henderson said: "With nearly half our pupils achieving at least three A grades, we are very pleased with their achievements."

Plumstead Manor-Negus School, Old Mill Road, Plumstead, achieved a 99.4 per cent pass rate, beating the national average by 2.8 per cent.

Blackheath High School, Vanbrugh Park, Blackheath, and Crown Woods School, Riefield Road, Eltham, both achieved 97 per cent A to E passes.

This was just ahead of the national average of 96.6 per cent passes at grades A to E.

But Woolwich Polytechnic School missed out on a 100 per cent rate this year, achieving 96 per cent.

Headteacher Byron Parker said: "We have a record number of students applying to university this year.

"I'm very pleased to see all students have gained the results they need for the university they chose."

Greenwich's overall pass rate of 96 per cent is a three per cent improvement on last year.
