THE Minister for Sport and the Olympics has officially opened works on the Cyclopark between Gravesend and Dartford.
Hugh Robertson, MP for Faversham and Mid Kent was joined by Gravesham Council leader Councillor Mike Snelling to view the project, which forms part of the Kent Thameside gateway regeneration.
The park, set to be completed in 2012, will have a 340m BMX racetrack, a skate park and a 2.9km circuit track for cycling and running.
Jamie Staff MBE, Olympic gold medallist and World BMX champion hopes to develop a ‘Jamie Staff Academy’ on-site for young people to develop their talent.
Mr Robertson said: “Cyclopark is going to be a huge draw for Kent and the wider South East and I’m delighted to officially mark the beginning of its construction.
"It is vital that we provide the facilities for local people to enjoy sport and keep fit and healthy.
"With the Olympics taking place in the year that Cyclopark is due to open, 2012 looks set to be an incredible year for sport; not only in London but throughout the South East.”
