LEWISHAM Deptford MP Joan Ruddock joined a charity in celebrating 60 years of support for children.
Ms Ruddock and the Child Poverty Action Group marked the anniversary of child benefit, which was first paid in August 1946.
In her constituency 11,425 families receive child benefit to help meet the costs of bringing up children.
Ms Ruddock is also backing the charity's Make Child Benefit Count campaign, which calls for an increase in child benefit so all children are paid the same amount.
Currently, parents receive £17.45 per week for their first child but only get £11.70 per week for the rest of their children.
Ms Ruddock said: "On the 60th anniversary of benefits for children, it would be a fitting time to increase child benefit and ensure all children are paid at the same rate. I am pleased to be backing the group's campaign."
