Kent Police are urging people to remain vigilant despite the terror threat level being decreased.

This morning the threat level dropped from critical - meaning an attack is imminent - to severe - which means an attack is potentially highly likely.

The Government also relaxed some of the restrictions on air travellers introduced in response to an alleged plot to attack transatlantic flights.

While there is nothing to suggest any specific threat to anywhere in Kent, the force is maintaining an increased presence, including some armed officers, at key sites including the Channel ports and Eurotunnel, Ashford International Station and Manston Airport.

Specialist community liaison officers are working closely with community groups to reassure them and monitor community tensions and concerns.

Deputy Chief Constable Jim Barker-McCardle said: "We are aware that some communities will be particularly concerned as a result of last week's events and unrest in the Middle East. These include minority ethnic and faith groups who may feel particularly vulnerable.

"We will be keeping them informed of any developments and I can assure them that we do take their concerns very seriously. Fortunately people appear to be responding sensibly and responsibly to the current threat level."

He added: "I would urge everyone in Kent and Medway to remain alert and to ring the anti-terrorist hotline on 0800 789321 if they have any suspicions, fears or possible information."
