Tim Porter reviews the movie being described as the bloodiest ever. Rating: 4/5
Every since Eli Roth jumped onto the horror scene with his funny yet violent movie Cabin Fever, fans was waiting to see what was the next project in line for the young director.
Then at Toronto's Film Festival in 2005 the shocker Hostel was screened to a public audience - at this screening one person fainted and another had a heart attack.
The word spread like wildfire, this was a horror film with balls. When it opened in January in America, the movie became a box office smash, scoring millions.
It has been criticised for being very slow but that is what it is meant to be.
The story is about three backpackers travelling around Europe for some fun and lots and lots of sex with beautiful girls. Suddenly one night they get told to visit this Hostel in Slovakia.
They meet some nice girls and then everything starts to go horribly wrong.
This film contains some pretty extreme violence and is not for the weak of heart, for instance I showed a screening of this in April (when the Region 1 copy was available) and some of the people were deeply shocked but enjoyed it at the same time.
Eli Roth claims Hostel to be his Cannibal Holocaust, however I think you could never beat the disturbing real animal violence that is seen in Cannibal Holocaust.
However, this film is a must-see for all horror fans.
It's perfect for a sleepover with friends or a night in with a bunch of friends.
