A BOGUS caller has been sentenced to two years in prison after conning an 83-year-old man out of £9,000.

Moses Mead, aged 21, of White Post Lane, Meopham, took the cash from the resident in exchange for providing roofing services.

However, he never carried out the work.

Unemployed Mead pleaded guilty to obtaining property by deception at Maidstone Crown Court on July 31.

Investigating officer Detective Constable Chris Mason said: "This incident is a classic example of a bogus caller.

"We were able to identify Mr Mead through various lines of inquiry and subsequently charged him.

"I cannot urge residents enough not to accept quotes from workmen who call at your house without prior appointment.

"It is always a good idea to choose a company from yellow pages or from a friend's recommendation."

Mead was sentenced to 24 months in prison following the incident in January this year.

He was also ordered to pay £9,000 compensation to the victim.
