Yes, you've guessed it. The annoying England flag that has been flying in my disillusioned neighbour's back garden has finally met its match. Last night it was brought down by the English weather, which is sort of a fitting end for it, really.
If you have been keeping up with my blogs over the past few months you will know all about this infamous and very annoying flag. It was unsightly during the World Cup - for which it was erected in the first place - but since our dismal defeat in the tournament, the flag has remained hoisted fifteen feet in the air above my neighbour's patio, the only testament to the England team's dire and very public humiliating defeat at the feet of the foreign teams.
Not content with this eyesore, my neighbour also has little bunting-type England flags above his patio doors which makes his house look like a seaside giftshop.
The main flag, however, has been exposed to the elements since the football fiasco and has come off rather the worse for wear. It is - or was - in ribbons, and it's frayed material made to look even more depressing than ever due to its ragged state.
Then came the wind last night.
Yes, that glorious English wind swept in yesterday and most definitely blew the cobwebs away. It also blew the flag away too, thank heavens.
Last night I remarked to Lady P. how the flagpole was bending rather precariously in the strong gales and I predicted that it wouldn't stand up to the battering it was receiving for very long. It was putting up a good fight when we retired to bed last night but it must have finally snapped in half sometime during the early hours of the morning.
When Lady P. brought me my morning coffee, she exclaimed that the flag had finally succumbed to the forces of Mother Nature. I leapt out of bed and made my way to the window and, lo and behold, the flag now rests crumpled in the undergrowth. One can just about make out the red and white amongst the green, so what a lovely start to the day it was.
My only worry is that the neighbour will be up with the lark tomorrow to restore the eyesore and ruin my weekend/year.
But with a bit of luck, the neighbour will call it a day, throw the wretched thing onto the dump and allow everyone to enjoy the view once more. Only time will tell, I'm afraid.
Naturally, I will keep you all informed.
