PREGNANT women and new mums are being encouraged to check they are receiving the correct benefits.
A Sure Start Maternity Grant, which is worth £500 for each baby, is available if new mums or their partner receive income support, jobseeker’s allowance or pension credit.
It is also available for people who receive tax credits at more than the basic family rate or employment and support allowance.
Claims can be made from 11 weeks before the baby is due or up to three months after the birth.
The rules will change in April next year so expecting parents are being urged to check their benefits so they do not miss out.
For a free benefits check, call Greenwich Council’s welfare rights service advice line on 020 8921 6375 or visit, greenwich.gov.uk/Greenwich/BenefitsGrants
