A SMOKE ALARM prevented a kitchen fire from causing serious damage this morning (September 6).
It went off at around 5.10am at a home in Birkdale Road, Abbey Wood, and woke up a woman and two young children who were sleeping.
They managed to get themselves out of the house and called the fire brigade to tackle the fire which started under the floorboards.
It is thought to have been caused by a problem with the wiring.
Firefighters from Plumstead fire station were there for around an hour.
