A SWAN rescued from the River Thames was so ill it had to be put down.
The RSPCA was called by a member of the public on Friday (August 27) at around 4pm after they saw the bird in the water by the Waterfront Leisure Centre in Woolwich.
When the RSPCA’s animal collection officer, Paul Taylor, arrived the swan was by the Woolwich Arsenal pier.
He used his crook to rescue the bird with the help of a PCSO.
The animal was taken to a vet but its injuries were too severe to save it.
An RSPCA spokesman said: “It looked like it had been attacked by a dog but that cannot be confirmed.
“We would always urge dog walkers to be vigilant and to keep control of their pets at the river front.”
