NEW figures from the Health Protection Agency show Bexley has the lowest rate of sexually transmitted infections among all the London boroughs.
The figures showed London has some of the worst infection rates in the country with 14 of London’s primary care trusts (PCT) featuring in the top 20 of PCTs with the highest infections.
City and Hackney Teaching PCT had the highest rate in London with 2,335 acute infections per 100,000 population.
This compares with Bexley CareTrust’s rate of 558.5 per 100,000 population.
Neighbouring Bromley PCT has the second lowest at 610 per 100,000, while Greenwich’s rate is 1,220 and Lewisham’s 1,188.
Dr Helen McGuire from the agency said teenagers and young people accounted for a large percentage of the new infections.
She said some of the increases could be due to better testing and reporting, but many Londoners were still taking part in unsafe sexual practices.
