FOUR mums who campaigned for a skateboarding park will lose the funding they were awarded if a site cannot be agreed for it to be built on.
Sophie Beswick, Imogen Slater, Sarah Hews and Jacqui Shimidzu formed Skate Park Action Group in October last year after residents complained about their sons skating in the street.
The Telegraph Hill Local Assembly awarded the group £1,000 from the Locality Fund to hold a consultation in February at Telegraph Hill Park.
Mrs Beswick, who has two sons, said: “Our initial idea was for the upper park but a campaign started against us called Save the Upper Park Campaign.
“We decided it would be better to work with the campaign members and have met two or three times to come up with designs.”
Eight of the youngsters gave a presentation to Lewisham’s young mayor and were awarded £47,000 from the Youth Opportunities fund, a government grant.
A decision about where the skate park should go must be made before March next year otherwise they will lose the funding.
Mrs Beswick of Waller Road, New Cross, said: “It will be a great new facility for the area and it will get the children off the streets.
The 49-year-old added: “People have a pre-conceved idea of young teenagers especially boys.
“But they have incredible skills and it’s amazing to watch.”
Designs for the skate park to be in the lower park will be presented at the next local assembly meeting held at Haberdashers' Aske's School on September 21 from 7pm.
