WELLING United have been granted a 14-week adjournment on the winding-up petition served on the club by HMRC.

The Wings initially owed the taxman £90,000 but had already paid off around half of that figure ahead of today’s hearing at the Royal Courts of Justice.

That hearing was adjourned and now the Park View Road outfit have 14 weeks’ breathing space to settle the remainder of the debt.

An official statement released to the club website said: “We are pleased to confirm that the club’s solicitors, Leathes Prior, have confirmed to us that the winding-up petition presented against the club by HM Revenue and Customs, which was heard in the High Court of Justice today, has been adjourned for a total of 14 weeks in order to give the club extra time in which to settle the remaining debt due to HM Revenue and Customs.

“The club will continue to pursue all avenues to raise the necessary finance to settle the petition debt within this timescale which will ensure the survival of the club.”

Today’s news will come as a huge relief to anxious supporters, who are now expected to intensify their efforts to secure the long-term future of the club.

Welling travel to Bromley on Saturday and are at home to Lewes on Bank Holiday Monday.
