X-FACTOR is back on television but it is votes for potential town sign designs rather than potential pop stars which are needed this week.

People in Penge are being asked to go to the library in Maple Road to look at the 15 images which could be used on the town’s sign.

The top nine favourites as chosen by the residents will be made into the sign which will be put up in the high street.

Ward councillor John Getgood dreamed up the idea and has the backing of resident group Penge Forum as well as members of the Penge Traders association.

Mr Getgood said: “The idea of the sign is to make people more aware of it being Penge and Penge being its own community.

“If it was a little country village it would have its own sign.

“There is no reason why Penge should not have one.”

He added: “This is all part of our efforts to revitalise Penge High Street and remind people of its historic significance.

“I hope people will support it as an attempt to reinforce Penge’s individual identity.

“So far we have received around a dozen suggestions for the design but we want to hear from more local people before a final decision is made.”

The exhibition in Penge library opened on August 17 and runs until the first week of September.

It is estimated the sign will cost £4,000 and Cllr Getgood hopes Bromley Council will put up half of the money.
