TWO secondary schools are set to be re-built as part of a multi-million pound government project.

Deptford Green School in Amersham Vale, New Cross, will be re-built under the Building Schools for the Future (BSF) programme after the project escaped the government axe.

The £30m scheme will equip the school with the latest computer facilities and a multi-functional conference hall.

A four-court sports hall and an external multi-use games area with a state-of-the-art playing surface will also be built.

Deptford Green headteacher, Peter Campling, said: “The students are really excited about their new building.

“If you can give them a really positive, high-quality learning environment, they will respond to that, producing even better results.”

Residents and community organisations will be able to access the facilities outside normal school hours.

Pupils will move into the new school in September 2012.

Greenwich Council have also been given the go-ahead for a full-scale re-build of Eltham Hill Technology College in Eltham Hill under the BSF scheme.

The development, which will cost more than £26m, involves pulling down the existing 1970s buildings, refurbishing the original 1920s school and adding three new buildings.

There will be a new sports pitch, landscaping and car parking as well as more than 9,000 square metres of floorspace, which will allow the college to take 150 post-16 students.

Work is due to start in late autumn and the project is expected to be finished in 2013.

Greenwich Council’s cabinet member for children and young people, Councillor Jackie Smith, said: “This decision is excellent news for Eltham Hill and promises an exciting future for both staff and students.”

Other BSF projects

Greenwich Council’s development plans for Blackheath Bluecoat School, Eltham Green School, Kidbrooke School and Shooter’s Hill Post-16 Campus have been scrapped following the government’s cuts to the BSF scheme.

But re-building projects of Thomas Tallis School and Crown Woods School are both underway and due for completion in 2011.

Plans to refurbish Plumstead Manor School and partially re-build The John Roan are still being finalised.

Lewisham’s Trinity School, formally Northbrook, is currently under construction and is due to open next year.

Four other schools in Lewisham will be refurbished, which includes Addey and Stanhope School, Crossways Sixth Form, Prendergast - Hiily Fields College and Sydenham School.

Bonus Pastor School is set to be rebuilt and Prendergast - Vale College will receive a new building.
