A CIGARETTE is being blamed for sparking a fire which destroyed a building in Kidbrooke last night (August 18).

The blaze tore through the lean-to at the side of a house in Briset Road at around 7.30pm and heat from the fire caused a downstairs window to crack.

But the firefighters from Eltham and Lee Green managed to stop the flames from spreading.

They were there for around 90 minutes.

The cause of the fire is not certain but it was thought to have been caused by a cigarette which had been thrown into a bin but not put out properly.
