POLICE are appealing for information on two boys after an arson attack on a cornfield destroyed around 35 acres of wheat.
The huge fire in a field off Shrubbery Road in South Darenth started at around 12.30pm yesterday, and more than 30 firefighters spent almost three hours battling the blaze.
Officers from Kent police are treating the fire as arson, and are appealing for information about two boys who were seen in the area at the time of the fire.
One of the boys was described as wearing a black top, while the other is said to have been wearing shorts, a black top and colourful shoes.
A spokeswoman said: “Police would like to speak to them as soon as possible as they may have vital information that could help with their inquiries.”
PC Chris Relf, neighbourhood officer for Farningham, Horton Kirby and South Darenth, says the fire could have put the lives at risk and injured wildlife.
He said: “I would urge anyone who was in the area at the time and may have seen something they thought was suspicious, or if they recognise the description of the two boys, to call police immediately.”
Eight fire engines from four different stations were involved in tackling the towering flames and smoke, which could be seen from miles away.
Anyone with information about the fire should call the police on 01732 379217 and quote reference number 11391.
