AN ILLEGAL Ukrainian immigrant has been sentenced to three-and-a-half years in jail for a £500,000 tax fraud.
Dmytro Shepel, of Dando Crescent, Kidbrooke, was sentenced at Woolwich Crown Court after pleading guilty to cheating public revenue.
The 25-year-old registered 350 fictitious people on the self-assessment tax system and falsely claimed £559,497 of tax repayments for 218 of them.
Shepel, also known as Dimitrijus Kubartas, had been living in the UK under a false Lithuanian identity.
His fake passport was used to open 74 bank accounts over two years, which received a number of fraudulent repayments.
Shepel was arrested following a HM Revenue and Customs investigation.
He will be deported upon his release.
