THERE is rare good news for users of the Blackwall Tunnel after an upcoming weekend closure was called off.

Engineering work was due to take place there from September 10 to September 13.

But Transport for London has called off the closure, saying refurbishment work was progressing well already.

There will be one more weekend closure this year in October.

The northbound Blackwall Tunnel is already closed five nights a week for three years while Transport for London carries out a £70m refurbishment project.

Northbound traffic is instead being diverted through the southbound tunnel, allowing no access south of the river from 9pm to 5am.

The Blackwall Tunnel Protest Group has been set up on Facebook to fight the closures.
