POLICE are appealing for information about the theft of cast iron drain covers from roads across the borough.
Between April 9 and July 26, 76 covers have been stolen, probably to be sold as scrap as the price of metals soars.
Police say it is a growing burden for the council whose responsibility it is to replace the covers.
Bexley’s Acting Superintendent Dave McLaren said: “My main concern is that road users are being put at serious risk as the thieves leave a gaping hole in the road, exposing drivers, cyclists, motorcyclists and pedestrians to the possibility of a serious accident.”
If you have any information call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
Anyone who discovers a missing cover can call the council on 020 8303 777.
