Budding teenage comedians are being given the chance to take part in a free five-day course and perform a routine at the Greenwich Comedy Festival, being held in the grounds of the Old Royal Naval College.

The Alternative Futures project will give entrants the chance to develop their joke-writing skills and stage personas with the help of a team of experts at a series of workshops held throughout the festival week, from September 6 to September 12.

There will also be some comedy masterclasses from some of the big names performing at the festival, which features Bill Bailey, Reginald D Hunter, Tom Green, Jenny Eclair, Stephen K Amos and many more.

Festival organiser Cass Briggs said: "We launched this project at last year’s festival and weren’t 100 per cent sure about what would happen.

"I was nervous when 10 quiet teenagers turned up at the beginning of the week and couldn’t believe it was the same group who, at the end of the project, were up on stage blazing through their routines in front of hundreds of people.

"I can’t wait to see what this year’s new talent has in store for us."
