PUPILS were visited by a top athlete and given 20 free bikes.

Children at Welling School, Elsa Road, held a team event which saw students taking part in a range of exercises led by triple jumper Larry Achike.

On the same day they received eight bikes following a bid from Bexley Council to transport for London.

A further 12 bikes are due to arrive in the next few weeks.

They will be used by students who do not have their own cycle, but who still want to join the school’s bike club.

Andy Casson from cycling charity Sustrans, who also visited the school, said: “There has been great enthusiasm shown by staff and children for cycling. “
