A FAMILY have held a football tournament to mark the fifth anniversary of their 11-year-old son’s death from a brain tumour.

Charlton fanatic Karl Lewis, of Springhead Road, Erith, was diagnosed with an inoperable tumour five years ago and died months later.

Since then his family have regularly held events to raise funds for Dartford’s Ellenor Foundation, which provided Karl and his family with care and support during his illness.

Every year they hold a five-a-side football tournament which this time around was held at the Goals Soccer Centre in Graham Road, Bexleyheath, which provided the pitches for free.

The trophy was won by Abbey United for the third time and this year there were 21 teams competing, compared to just nine in the first tournament.

Karl’s uncle Les Fraser, 47, of Bexley Road, Erith, explained: “Since we started it in 2006 it’s just been getting bigger and bigger.

“Not only are more teams competing, but more people are helping out too.”

They have also organised a quiz night to raise further cash.

Mr Fraser, a forklift truck diver who has previously competed in the London marathon to raise money for the charity, said: “We basically do it for two reasons - to keep his memory alive and to help the Ellenor who helped the family through it all.

“He was only 11 years old and you don’t expect to see an 11-year-old die of cancer. We just want to remember him.”

They football tournament raised around £1,300 for the charity.
