DETECTIVES investigating a fatal crash are appealing for information about young people who may have been throwing stones at traffic at the time.

Michael Baker, aged 47, from Littlehampton, West Sussex, died after the recovery truck he was a passenger in collided with a stationary articulated lorry on the A20 on Saturday (July 24).

The crash, which took place near the Swanley interchange at around 10.40am, happened after the lorry driver had pulled over when something hit his windscreen, cab and the side of the vehicle.

A spokeswoman for Kent police says a group of young people were seen standing on the wooded side of the London-bound carriageway around the time of the accident.

Sevenoaks District Commander Chief Inspector Adrian Futers said: “Youngsters hang around near the road and there have been previous reports of things being thrown at vehicles.

“We have spoken or will be speaking to the people who we know go to this location, but we want information about everyone who hangs around there and specifically who was there on Saturday morning.”

The area is accessed via the underpass from Laburnum Avenue, and a mobile police station will be at the corner of Laburnum Avenue and Lynden Way this week.

Mr Baker died in hospital shortly after the crash, while the driver of the recovery truck remains in hospital with serious injuries.

Anyone with information should go to the mobile station, call the incident room on 01622 654853, or call Kent Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555111.
