THE barriers at the Dartford Crossing toll booths could be lifted during peak times to ease congestion.
Roads minister Mike Penning said the Department for Transport (DfT) is considering the measure after a meeting with Secretary of State Phillip Hammond and Dartford MP Gareth Johnson last week.
This would mean motorists would not pay the toll when the barriers were raised, however Mr Penning said he would prefer to scrap the barriers completely and have drivers pay via phone or online.
He said: “Our preferred option is the use of newer technology to allow free-flow charging and we have asked the Highways Agency to work up proposals as a matter of urgency.
“However, we are also willing to consider the possibility of lifting the barriers when congestion is particularly severe.
“Any solution will need to take account of the potential benefits and impacts, and the need to maintain the safe operation of the crossing for the millions of its users.”
Mr Johnson, who has urged the government to remove the toll completely, said: “This review represents the most exciting progress we have seen in alleviating the congestion in twenty years.
“While I haven’t yet convinced the Treasury the charge levied on motorists should be removed, the DfT is convinced the toll booths themselves need to be removed.
“At long last, we could see an end to the congestion at the Dartford Crossing and see this within the lifetime of this parliament.”
