TWO events have been held as part of a campaign to save a sports field from being built on.

More than 360 people attended a dance and music festival and a mass litter pick as part of the Save Hervey Road Sports Field campaign.

The 4.8 hectare field in Blackheath is under threat from Greenwich Council which is considering moving Willow Dene School in Plumstead onto the site.

Community group, Friends of Hervey Road Sports Field, has been holding a series of events on the site to raise awareness of the field's plight.

Group chairman Susan Proudfoot said: "The events were extremely successful. Thomas Tallis and Blackheath Bluecoats schools put on some brilliant music and dances for the festival.

"There were drink and food stalls and an African drumming band were brilliant too.

"And 17 residents turned out to help clear litter from the sports field in readiness for the festival.

"Our efforts in the two previous years seem to have paid off as there was much less litter this year."

She added: "We must stress, we do want Willow Dene school to get a new site, but not at the expense of a sports field, as Lewisham is already short on green space."

So far more than 1,000 people have signed up to the campaign which hopes to pressure the council into leaving the field untouched and allowing clubs to use it for sport and activities.

News Shopper has contacted Greenwich Council for a response, and is awaiting a reply.
