A GROUP of disabled people have launched a campaign to raise £50,000 to buy a customised minibus to help more people attend their day centre.
North Kent Disabled Foundation (NKDF) wants the vehicle to make it possible for isolated people to get to and from its home in Waller Park Pavilion, Dartford, and for members to go on day trips.
Around 20 people currently use the centre off Wood Lane, which was set up because NKDF members feel disabled facilities provided by Kent County Council (KCC) are inadequate.
Founder of the charity, 64-year-old Danny O’Brien, of Ridge Lane, Culverstone, believes many more people would like to attend the centre, but find it difficult to get there.
He said: “Since KCC closed the Queen Elizabeth Foundation (QEF) Centre in Brent Way, Dartford, in 2008, we think up to 50 vulnerable adults are living in isolation.
“We want to be able to offer them a daytime option, and the minibus will mean we can pick up people who find it difficult to get here, as well as take them on day trips.”
NKDF has so far raised more than £2,000, after holding a raffle and receiving a £1,000 donation from Dartford Council leader Councillor Jeremy Kite.
Cllr Kite said: "I am delighted to support the wonderful work of the NKDF campaigners.
“They provide a superb service to local residents and I urge anyone to make contact with them if they think their service could be of help.”
