IN the year Florence Nightingale died, and the Zeppelin made its first commercial flight in Germany, Doris Crawford was born in Camberwell.
The year was 1910 and this week Mrs Crawford celebrated her 100th birthday.
Originally from Peckham she worked in the retail and magazine trades before marrying her husband Robert in 1936.
During the war, while her husband was in the RAF, Mrs Crawford moved briefly to Wales, but did not like it and returned to London.
The couple had two sons.
Mr Crawford died in 1979 and their younger son died 10 years later.
Now with two grandchildren and three great grandchildren, Mrs Crawford has lived in St Mary’s care home in Main Road, Sidcup, for the past two years, where the family gathered for a birthday celebration.
