A PENTHOUSE flat has been destroyed by a fire which raged for more than four hours this morning (July 16).
Forty firefighters tackled the blaze which tore through the home on the seventh floor of Alaska House in the Deals Gateway development.
Around 100 people were evacuated from the building near the Deptford Bridge DLR station after the fire took hold at around 1.30am.
Crews from Greenwich, Lewisham, Deptford, Forest Hill, New Cross and Lee Green fire stations battled with the flames.
They managed to stop it spreading to any other flats and the smoke damage to the rest of the building is described as minimal.
Relief crews were sent from East Greenwich and Woolwich and the last firefighters left the scene by around 6am.
The cause of the blaze is under investigation.
