A CAFE which asked a partially blind man to leave because he had a guide dog says it will never happen again.

Bexley Council says it is also reminding food premises not to exclude customers with guide dogs.

Adrian Shuter, 51,only has 30 per cent vision in one eye, after losing his sight to diabetes.

He had gone to the Bubble and Squeak cafe in Crayford Road, Crayford, with his wife Sonia, his mother-in-law and his son Dan, 29, who has Down’s Syndrome.

He said: “We sat down at a table and Sonia read out the menu on the board.

“We decided what we wanted and Sonia went to the counter to give our order.”

Mr Shuter added: “Then a member of staff came across to the table and said ’no dogs’.”

Mr Shuter says he replied: “Surely guide dogs are exempt?”,.

But the man repeated “no dogs” and told him to leave Haydn outside.

Mr Shuter said: “It was a very hot day and there was no shade and nowhere to tie him up.

He said: “I have had a guide dog for 13 years and I have never been challenged before.

“I felt embarrassed and degraded and it was unsettling to be thrown out.

“I was also very angry, and so was my family.”

Mr Shuter called the council and Guide Dogs for the Blind who both contacted the cafe.

He said: “I didn’t want anyone else to feel the embarrassment I felt.”

A spokeswoman for the cafe said the matter had now been resolved.

She added: “The person concerned didn’t realise and has been spoken to.

“It will not happen again.”
