A BOROUGH’S free swimming scheme for teenagers has been partially extended.
The scheme has been axed by the government’s Department for Culture, Media and Sport as part of £73m worth of cost-cutting measures.
Following the announcement, free swimming, offered by many councils for under-16s and over-60s, was due to end from July 31.
But Mayor of Lewisham Sir Steve Bullock, who is planning major cuts elsewhere in council spending, says he will keep it going for under-16s until schools go back in September.
He also said the scheme might also carry on into the new school year.
Sir Steve said: “In financial terms, the benefits of free swimming far outweigh the costs.”
