A PAIR of students from Hurstmere Sports and Science College are celebrating after becoming Kent junior doubles champions.
Year 7 duo Alex Juniper and Lucas Percy teamed up to represent Hurstmere at the Kent schools tennis championships in Bromley last month.
The event was hosted between Ravensbourne School, Bromley Lawn Tennis Club, Bromley Tennis Centre and Newstead Wood School.
Due to poor weather, the decision to proceed with the event was not taken until 6am on the day of the competition but with the rain promising to bypass Bromley, the tournament was given the green light.
Ravensbourne School was the venue for the junior boys doubles competition for students in Year 7 and Year 8, with more than 50 pairs competing.
Team captain Juniper and Percy started the day in a box competition with three other pairs.
After winning their first two games, the Hurstmere duo lost to a particularly strong pairing from Ravensbourne School, although they still qualified for the latter stages.
The next three games saw Juniper and Percy play some exhilarating and compelling tennis before triumphing in the last game against Severnoaks School, to progress to the final.
They were matched again with Ravensbourne School and gained revenge for their earlier defeat with some scintillating rallies to win 6-1, ensuring the Kent doubles junior title went to Hurstmere for the first time in the Sidcup school’s history.
