PLANS for a major development around Millwall’s football ground have gone on show for the first time.
The development will see 2,700 new homes built along with open spaces and a sports centre backed by government agency Sport England, all located around the New Den.
It is hoped that the development could help rejuvenate plans for the proposed Surrey Canal Road on the East London Line after recent problems in securing its funding from the government.
Restaurants, shops, and cafes will also be included on the 30-acre site, to be built by developer Renewal.
Following a preview which was shown at People’s Day in Catford, an exhibition of the plans will be held at The Lewington Centre in Eugenia Road, Rotherhithe, from July 25 to July 27.
Renewal director Mark Taylor said: “The Surrey Canal area is in real need of new investment and we are delighted to be bringing forward plans which will create so many opportunities for local people.”
Lewisham Deptford MP Joan Ruddock said: “Surrey Canal has the potential to provide good opportunities for local people and existing communities, from new jobs and homes, to new sports facilities and open spaces. “I am looking forward to the exhibition and would encourage local people and businesses to get involved. “I will be maintaining a close interest as the plans take shape.”
A planning application is due to be submitted to Lewisham Council in the autumn.
