PLANNED new schools across the area are to be abandoned following government cuts.

The news comes after the government decided to axe the Building Schools for the Future (BSF) programme, meaning 715 schools across the country will see their rebuilding projects scrapped.

Greenwich, where the council was behind with its rebuilding programme, is the worst affected borough in the News Shopper area.

Funds for new buildings for Eltham Green, Kidbrooke and Shooter’s Hill Post-16 are among those ditched.

Blackheath Bluecoat’s proposed move to the Greenwich Peninsula, only announced after John Roan governors decided not to move there following years of controversy, will now also be scrapped.

And question marks also hang over Eltham Hill Technology Academy and St Paul’s Academy, whose futures are set to be decided in the next few weeks.

St Paul’s was left off the original list of schools affected by the cuts - one of a series of errors Education Secretary Michael Gove was forced to apologise for in the Commons yesterday.

In Bromley, funding for Kelsey Park Sports College has also been abandoned.

Lewisham’s BSF schools are unaffected by the cuts.
