A COUPLE claim to be the culprits behind the mystery of orange lights in the sky.
Anthony and Gill Clayton from Beckenham, were celebrating their 25th wedding anniversary with friends and family on June 12.
To mark the occasion they released 25 Chinese lanterns into the sky at around 9.30pm.
Mrs Clayton of Ronald Close, said: “We were just having a nice family party and thought it would be a nice idea.
“I am so surprised so many people have reacted.”
The co-owner of a printing and design company added: “The lanterns last for a maximum of five minutes.
“You cannot let them off in a formation, they are directed by the wind.”
On June 16, Anne Fountain from Beckenham got in touch with the News Shopper.
She was watching TV when she noticed the flying objects on the same day.
Preivously the resident of Village Way said: “They were quite high for a helicopter but too low for a plane.
“It was actually quite spooky because they just disappeared.”
Following the call News Shopper asked if anyone else had seen the strange lights and in just one day there were seven calls.
Elaine Perkins of Goddard Road, Beckenham, said: “I just could not understand what they were, I have never seen anything like it.
“I looked behind me and they had just swooped and then stopped.”
Olive Jackson of Benedict Close, Orpington, said: “It looked like they had taken off and then slowed down.”
