Summer is finally here and this season it’s time to rock the effortless chic look because, let’s be honest, who wants a high maintenance do on holiday or at a festival?
Well, before you do a Britney and shave it all off in a blind panic, Jed Hamill is here from hairdressing experts Graham Webb International to tell you how to stay cool in the hot weather.
The modern mullet
Who’s rocking it? Alexa Chung and model Freya Beha Erichsen.
Why it’s hot: When you think of the mullet, you think of the awful 70s Kevin Keegan look. Fear not, I would never have you leave the house looking like that! Finally we have found a mullet that works. A clever mix of short and longer layers this style looks great worn down and wavy for that rock chick vibe, sweep the fringe to one side for a grown-up twist, or tie in a looser up-do – officially the hardest working haircut ever.
Who suits it? Heart-shaped faces, this look is great for softening a pointy chin.
The look: Striped t-shirt and denim shorts for a chic Parisian look.
Don’t go there if: You have a square jaw, the length sits right on your jawline which will make your chin look wider. Also, this is one to be avoided for girls with bushy hair - the Noddy Holder look is not making a comeback. The modern mullet looks great on chestnut locks, but not so great on blondes.
Styling tips: Get yourself a good styling cream. A great one is Centre Stage smoothing styling cream (£9.20 100ml) from Clynol’s Look at Me range which will tame any frizz without leaving the hair weighed down with product - it smells gorgeous too.
The 'glossic'
Who’s rocking it? Gwyneth Paltrow and Salma Hayek.
Why it’s hot: It’s the perfect fashion formula of grunge meets glossy with a bit of Hollywood glamour thrown in. Fabulous!
Who it suits: Oval and rounder faced beauties. It works really well on medium to thin textured hair. If you have thinner hair then adding in a few highlights will make the hair shaft swell and appear thicker which will look great. The length and grown out fringe effect will slim the wider features of a rounded face and naturally lengthen the face.
The look: Super sexy shoulder padded dresses and tops to balance the gloss.
Don’t go there if: You have thick hair. This style needs to frame the face, sitting flat around the face and close to your eyes.
Styling tip: You need to use a lotion based serum which won’t weigh the hair down but give it a gorgeous sleek finish.
The shattered bob
Who’s rocking it? Victoria Beckham.
Why it’s hot: Posh stepped out sporting this choppy, lived-in cut that’s slightly distressed at the ends at the close of last year. After all these years she’s still our style icon and this look is so low maintenance and easy to wear during the summer months.
Who it suits: This look is tailored to suit all as the choppiness has a softening, youthful effect. It’s also extremely versatile, so rounder face shapes simply need to add height to elongate the face.
The look: Denim cut-off shorts and a t-shirt. This look dressed down but polished, the perfect beach to bar style.
Don’t go there if: You have curly or straight hair and don’t have time to style it. The trick to this cut is to create super soft waves so product is essential.
Styling tip: Reach for the curling cream to utilise the natural wave of your hair. We love curl tame curling cream (£7.15 150ml) from Clynol’s fab new Style range. Simply work a small amount through damp hair, scrunch and leave to dry. It’s literally a wash-and-go kind of look.
The W-undercut
Who’s rocking it? Rihanna.
Why it’s hot: This asymmetric under-cut is easy to maintain on holiday and will have you looking and feeling super cool.
Who it suits: This is great for any girls who are into experimenting with their do. Such a cutting edge, on-trend haircut, this is perfect for anyone who fancies a dramatic change and has the rock chick look and attitude to pull it off.
The look: A super statement colour! This style can be worn in curls, waves or straight, you just need to keep the volume at all times. Fabulous with a girly sundress or a slouchy casual look on the plane. Brilliant!
Don’t go there if: You aren’t one for standing out of the crowd. This is a really striking look so shave one side so that you can swap partings and go from demure to evening in one foul swoop!
Styling tip: Use a small amount of gel for control and long lasting hold.
The pixie
Who’s rocking it? Carey Mulligan.
Why it’s hot: It’s this season’s pixie crop but a lot more flattering, with softer, longer layers that subtly fix facial flaws. It’s the most wearable short style around.
Who it suits: This is a do that can be tweaked to suit almost anyone. If you have a round face then keep the layers shorter at the front and any long fringes can add bulk to the features. The great news is if you have fine hair this style will make hair appear thicker.
The look: Super girly 60s style lacy tights and cute little dress for the perfect evening look.
Styling tip: It’s all in the texture so go for a texturising paste such as Tease structure gum (£10.60 100ml) from Clynol’s Play with Me range. Simply work a small amount through the ends of the hair and use the fingers to tease into shape.
The fash-lob
Who’s rocking it? Cheryl Cole.
Why it’s hot: The moment that the Cole ditched the hair extensions for this gorgeous layered long bob she got a whole lot cooler. It’s the new style for the independent woman.
Who it suits: The heart shaped face is the perfect canvas for the fash-lob but it’s a style that works for everyone. Named the ‘Farrah Fawcett hairdo of our time’ it’s got the right amount of curl and volume to suit all while still looking strong and chic.
The look: Statement couture, but this do will work for any outfit day or night.
Don’t go there if: You want to wash and go - this do will need a little work to achieve Cheryl’s curls. You will need to use the tongs at some point.
Styling tip: For a tousled look, prep the hair with a styling spray. Comb your hair into a side parting for more of an edge.
The slim fast (or soft shag)
Who’s rocking it? Lily Allen.
Why it’s hot: The ‘it’ cut right now for mid-lengths. It’s soft and choppy qualities make it super slimming!
Who it suits: If you have a round face and thick hair, the soft and feathery layers will make cheekbones stand out, eyes look wider while it slims and softens your features. As this do is shorter at the front and longer at the back, looking slightly torn is the key, meaning it requires minimal styling!
The look: Casual rock chick or wear it wavy with a maxi-dress.
Don’t go there if: This style can actually be adjusted to suit everyone and is perfect holiday hair as it requires minimum effort to style. If you have a small forehead then go for a longer fringe or if you have a slightly square face then make sure that the layers are more feathered to hide and soften the jawline.
Styling tip: Get some va-va-voom into your style by using a thickening cream when blow drying like volume thicken volume hair-thickening elixir (£8.25 150ml) from Clynol’s Style range for fabulous boost and shine.
