PEOPLE are being encouraged to apply for a tree to be planted in their street.

Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, hopes to have 10,000 street trees planted in the capital by 2012.

So far 5,000 have been planted in 24 London boroughs.

Homeowners in one of the 40 priority areas, which includes Abbey Wood, New Cross, Deptford and Brockley are being urged to register online.

Penge and Erith are also considered priority areas.

Mr Johnson said: “I am proud we are halfway to our tree nirvana of 10,000 more trees by 2012.

“These street trees are now sprouting up across the capital making our skyline greener, air sweeter and laying down their roots in this great city.”

The street tree programme is managed by the Forestry Commission and environmental charity, Groundwork London.
