WOMEN are being targeted in a health drive to get men who think they are “invincible” into shape.
Bromley Primary Care Trust’s 12-week Project Heart campaign is aimed at encouraging middle aged men to have a free heart check by calling on their wives, partners, sisters or daughters to persuade them.
Candy Guard, 48, was concerned about her partner Robin Shaw’s smoking and drinking, so she made him go for a check up after she saw the PCT’s advert.
The 48-year-old, of Elmers End Road, Penge, said: “Like most men, Robin didn’t seem bothered, but I felt I needed to get him to have a check.”
According to the PCT, men aged between 40 and 59 are the group least likely to take personal action over their health.
The trust’s director of public health, Nada Lemic, said: “Reaching men at this stage in life, when most think they are invincible, has always been a challenge and we felt we really had to try new ways to get to them.”
Following his check, Mr Shaw, 40, is looking at ways to quit smoking and reduce stress levels.
The father-of-three said: “I was quite pleased with some of the results but now have good ideas for what I can do to feel even better and stay healthier for longer as I grow older.
“I would say to any man of my age don’t be scared, have a check.”
