PUPILS and staff have continued to pay tribute to a 14-year-old who died in a deep-water dock.
Kafi Ibrahim, a pupil at Prendergast-Ladywell Fields College in Brockley, fell into Rainbow Quay in Surrey Quays at around noon on Saturday (May 25).
Police divers only managed to find him two hours later and he was eventually pronounced dead in hospital at 4.10pm.
In a statement released today, head teacher Mel Whitfield said: “Our whole college community is deeply shocked and saddened by the tragic death of Kafi, who was a Year 8 student.
“Kafi was a keen footballer and had friends from all year groups, indeed he had just finished playing in our own world cup competition and had become quite a celebrity as the top goal scorer for the Brazil team whom he represented.
“Kafi's younger brother and two older sisters are students at the college.
“All our children are being supported by the teaching and non-teaching staff and are preparing messages for Kafi's family, as well as planning a range of different ways in which they would like to celebrate his life and pay their respects.“
Friends from Kafi's tutor group have said: "He was loyal, even if we were playing football and losing he wouldn't give up. He had a great big smile and he used to laugh a lot.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with Kafi's family at this very sad time.”
Two Facebook groups in the teen’s memory have been joined by 201 people so far leaving tributes and messages of condolence for his family.
People living nearby have claimed the water is far deeper than it seems and children often jump into it in the summer, despite warning notices.
