WORKERS at a community trust pulled on their wellies and did their bit for national Volunteers Week.
Staff at Trust Thamesmead joined forces with the environmental charity Thames21 to help clean up a stretch of one of the town’s canals.
They retrieved rubbish weighing 24 stones which included a traffic cone and a bag of plates retrieved from the canal footpaths.
Thamesmead has 7km of canals bordered by footpaths and which attract a huge variety of wildlife such as herons, swans and coots.
The trust’s head of development David Stone said there was a large unmet demand for volunteers in the town.
He added: “Trust Thamesmead wants to work with local residents to promote volunteering as a way of reconnecting with our communities.”
