A CAMPAIGNER has welcomed the government’s move to scrap a national identity card scheme.
The coalition government announced in the Queen’s Speech its Identity Documents Bill to “restore freedoms and civil liberties through the abolition of identity cards and repeal of unnecessary laws.”
But Deptford campaigner Robin Tudge from pressure group NO2ID has warned measures should be taken to ensure the database behind the scheme is completely eradicated.
Mr Tudge said: “The focus of our campaign against ID cards has always been the danger from the mass of personal data that would have been hoarded on the scheme's databases.
“We will be carefully studying the government's proposed legislation to ensure it completely eradicates this threat."
