A NEW health minister made her first public visit with the opening of a birth centre.
Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for Public Health Anne Milton MP presented the centre’s first mother to give birth and her midwife with bouquets of flowers.
Tanisha Joseph, aged 20, gave birth to baby Anira on the centre’s first day.
The facility, based at Lewisham Hospital, is staffed entirely by midwives and aims to provide a home-like environment for pregnant women.
It has five birthing rooms, each with an en suite bathroom and three with birthing pools.
Ms Milton said: “This centre is a shining example of what women, their partners, and their babies want – safe, simple, and convenient care in a home from home setting. “
