A SUPERCLUB which launched just two years ago and hosted performances by stars like Mark Ronson and Supergrass has made a sudden decision to close for the summer.

The Matter nightclub, based at The O2 arena in Greenwich, made the announcement on May 20, leading to speculation about its future.

Its closure means a host of events scheduled across the summer will need to be rearranged.

Clubbers have cited the venue's poor transport facilities and Jubilee Line maintenance work as reasons for low attendances at Matter events.

Regular clubber, Matt Goodwill, of West Wickham said: “Getting there wasn't a problem but it was getting home - you would have to wait for the first bus the next morning.”

The 20-year-old student, who has attended the club more than 15 times said that the popularity of nights varied widely.

He said: “I've been there on nights where there must have been around 3, 000 people there.”

Mr Goodwill, who has handed out flyers and promoted events for Matter added: “The big nights were always sold out but other nights I would go and it would be half full or nearly empty.”

A spokeswoman for AEG Europe, which owns the O2, said: “We can confirm that the Matter nightclub has temporarily closed over the summer period with a view to relaunching later in the year.

“This decision has been taken by the owners of Matter.

“The reopening will be considered over the course of the next few months.”
