LIBERAL Democrat Duncan Borrowman says he is not suffering any sleepless nights after his vote to accept a coalition government with the Conservative Party following the general election.

Mr Borrowman, who stood as the Lib Dem candidate in Old Bexley and Sidcup is also a member of the Lib Dems’ federal executive, which had a right of veto over the deal.

He said: “I attended with a heavy heart.

“I have fought against the Conservatives for decades.

“I entered thinking there was a 90 per cent chance I would vote against the deal on the table.

“I was wrong.”

The process took three hours of discussion and three separate votes, with more than 100 people, including Lib Dem peers and MPs voting.

Mr Borrowman says only one person, a federal executive member, voted against.

He said he voted in favour because the package the executive had before it was “packed with Liberal Democrat policies”.

And since the deal was struck, he has not changed his mind.

He told News Shopper: “What we have got is what I had in my hand when I voted for it.

“Bums in ministerial limos was not the price, but I don't think we have come out at all badly.

“And it is all far better than a Tory minority government followed by an almost certain general election a few months down the line.”

He accused the Labour Party of “bottling it” and claimed it did not really want a coalition, which he says he would have liked to explore.

Mr Borrowman says he voted with his head and his heart.

He added: “I will sleep easy knowing I have played my part in history and done the right thing.”
