HABERDASHERS’ Aske’s Knights Academy girls’ U14s basketball team travelled to Leyton on April 30 to take part in the London final four tournament.
They were battling to win their third trophy of the season after becoming Lewisham champions and east London county title holders.
The Leyton event was the biggest and most prestigious basketball competition of its kind in the capital.
It sees the best teams from north, south, east and west London battle it out for the overall capital championship title and Habersashers’ Knights, representing the south, were competing for the first time.
First up was a meeting with Heston School (west) and after an extremely close battle, Knights’ place in the final was secured with a narrow 44-43 win.
In the final, the Knights team faced the champions of the north, Greig City, who boasted a trio of England U14 players in their ranks.
Habersashers’ Knights put up a great show but despite their best efforts, the girls missed out on the London title to their experienced opponents, going down to a 60-31 defeat.
Coach Mick Lloyd said: “To come second in London in their first major tournament is a fantastic achievement.
“They are now ranked fifth in England, which makes the feat even more exceptional.”
