CROSSRAIL will go ahead under the new Con-Lib government despite fears the Conservatives would scrap the scheme.
Last month Tory Shadow Minister for London, Justine Greening, commented in a radio interview, saying the scrapping of the £16bn rail scheme was “possible”.
But a spokesman from the Department for Transport confirmed today (May 14) Crossrail will be completed.
He said: “The Government supports Crossrail. It is clearly a very important project for London - but we need to ensure every pound invested in the project is well spent.”
Set to open in 2017, Crossrail will provide a direct rail link between the Thames Gateway and the Thames Valley, from Abbey Wood and Shenfield in the East to Heathrow and Maidenhead in the West.
