A BUTCHER celebrated 50 years in the trade with bucks fizz and sausage rolls.
David Down has worked at DA Down and Sons Butchers in Plumstead since leaving school in 1960.
The 68-year-old celebrated his half century with family and customers.
When asked the secret to a successful business, the father-of-three said: "Being friendly to people is important.
"After a while it's like serving friends, not customers.”
Mr Down won the Evergreen magazine Shopkeeper of the Year award last year after being nominated by customers.
He began running the business in The Slade when his father Bill died in 1963.
His 65-year-old wife Pam joined the business in 1975.
The couple will also enjoy a 40s style party this month to celebrate their 25th wedding anniversary.
