STUDENTS at one Bexley school ran their own mini “general election” and produced a markedly different result from the national poll.
Organised by two year 12 students Adele Kufour and Zainab Conteh at Bexley Grammar School in Danson Lane, Welling, it was a chance for students not yet old enough to vote, to feel part of the country’s election fever.
Sixth form students created posters and podcasts for the candidates, there were election debates and support staff produced polling cards for every student.
An area of the school was set aside for the polling station, and on the same day as the national elections were taking place, 1,108 students cast their votes.
The result was a resounding victory for Labour, whose candidate polled 40 per cent of the votes.
The Liberal Democrats were second on 31 per cent, with the Tories on 24 per cent.
