With the election upon us in a matter of days and the three main parties pulling out all the stops - including their wives - to get our vote.
Jed Hamill, hair expert and makeover guru of Graham Webb International, offers his advice about how the leading ladies could improve their looks and perhaps even steal our votes with a brand new style ready for the steps of number 10.
From the subtle to the spectacular, a haircut can sum up your personality and make a huge difference to the way the world perceives you, as Jed always says: “Hair has iconic status and sets lasting impressions. It has a language all of its own and the way hair is worn, arranged and dressed reveals something of the personality, individuality and even rank.
"A perfect example is former leader Margaret Thatcher whose hair morphed into a version of the Queen’s, denoting her power and status.”
For many women hair can be their security blanket and being this close to the election, the leading ladies will be scared to make any changes as it may seem self-absorbed, frivolous and create negative press attention, but Jed argues that the leading wives may just win our attention and votes if they have a much-needed hair change.
Sarah Brown
Sarah is blessed with a soft copper natural tint that glimmers in different situations lighter or redder.
At GWI we’d enhance that colour either by bringing out the sun-kissed tones or by adding a little more copper to add colour to her pale complexion.
Either way, gentle threads of colour would be more youthful for her.
Sarah’s hair is worn in a safe, easy to manage, mid-length shoulder cut which really doesn’t give her a great deal of style. It lacks definition. She could make much more of a fashion statement - think Miranda in Sex and the City with her flaming copper textured, jaw length, waved bob - which on Sarah would look stunning.
The straight hair look on Sarah doesn’t balance with her curvy figure and would look so much better with a gentle tonged wave. When Michelle Obama recently came to London with her super stylish bobbed hair, Sarah looked positively frumpy in comparison.
So it’s time to ditch the lacklustre locks Sarah and go for a look that screams style.
Samantha Cameron
Sam’s hair is typically English with its medium hair thickness and straight texture. I love her colour as it radiates shine whatever light she’s in, but it would look a little softer with a few gentle strands of lighter brown threads around her face - as if it’s been touched by the sun.
Girls with dark hair like Sam can stay gorgeously brunette but having colours just two shades lighter woven throughout can add a multidimensional hue that looks stunning and this also softens dark, straight hair which can be ageing.
Sam’s cut is simple, in fact too simple, and it lacks any definite shape. Cut it into a Gwyneth Paltrow long bob and it could look so much more sophisticated.
Often, it looks as if she’s not had time to do it and this is the danger with having shapeless hair.
Adding a fringe would give Samantha a much sleeker look and would be great when she wears her hair up or down.
Girls like Sam often dream of having voluptuous hair but the reality is that big hair requires high maintenance and with her busy lifestyle, career and children, finding a cut that is easy to manage but screams stylish is more challenging.
The political wives are all playing too safe in the style stakes and need to opt for haircuts with more panache.
Miriam Gonzalez Durrantez
Miriam’s long, glossy, thick hair is typical of her roots.
For the most part Miriam wears her hair natural and free-flowing and in some ways it’s a relief to see a political wife not looking too groomed.
The problem is that all three wives don’t take their hair grooming too seriously and rarely add even the tiniest bit of glamour to their looks.
They might be investing in key wardrobe pieces but hair seems to be low on their style agenda.
I saw Miriam being interviewed on TV this week with her locks pulled back into a ponytail. The lengths of hair around her face had fallen out and I thought this looked really chic on her, if only she were to have it cut to that length rather than pulling it back into a ponytail!
